Samajwadi MP Faces ₹1.91 Crore Fine for Power Theft

Electricity Department Takes Action Against Samajwadi Party MP

The Electric Department has taken stringent measures against Zia Ur Rehman, the Samajwadi Party’s Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, imposing a fine of ₹1.91 crore due to alleged power theft. In addition, his electricity supply has been disconnected, according to an official statement.

Charges Under Electricity Act

The incident came to light following a police case registered under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which deals with electricity theft. In connection with this, Mamlukur Rehman Barq, the MP’s father, has also been booked for allegedly threatening officials during an inspection at their residence in the Deepa Sarai area.

Inspection Details and Evidence

Superintending Engineer Vinod Kumar confirmed that the electric department’s inspection team uncovered evidence of bypassing the meter, signifying illegal power usage. This inspection was carried out amidst substantial security presence at the MP’s residence on a Thursday morning.

Previous Incidents and Legal Actions

Notably, this is not the first time Zia Ur Rehman has been in the spotlight for legal issues. He has also been booked in connection with the November 24 violence, where a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal resulted in a clash, leading to four fatalities.

Response from Authorities

Superintendent of Police, Krishna Kumar Bishnoi, elaborated on the events during which Santosh Tripathi from the Electricity Department was tasked to examine power equipment. The inspection team was reportedly met with obstruction and threats from Barq, who allegedly warned engineers about future repercussions. These interactions have been recorded on video by the electricity department, strengthening the case against Barq.

Additional Evidence and Findings

Vinod Kumar further revealed irregularities during the meter assessment, where smart meters that were installed showed zero unit consumption over the past six months. Contrarily, an inspection detected a 16.48 kilowatt load within the premises, indicating tampering upon further lab investigations.

Ongoing Inspections and Threats

The electricity inspection drive is continuing in the Sambhal region. During recent checks, engineers faced further threats from Barq, instigating additional police complaints. This ongoing investigation signifies an assertive stand by the authorities to enforce compliance and lawfulness.
