Final Farewell to Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

The ashes of the esteemed former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, were solemnly immersed at the Yamuna Ghat near the Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila Sahib in Delhi on December 29. This sacred ritual followed his cremation, which was conducted with full state honors at Nigambodh Ghat the previous day.

The Immersion Ceremony

Earlier in the day, Dr. Singh’s ashes were respectfully transferred to the Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila Sahib. The family of the late Dr. Manmohan Singh engaged in traditional rituals at the Gurdwara, including Shabad Kirtan (musical recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib), Paath (recitation of Gurbani), and Ardas.

Family and Dignitaries Pay Their Respects

Gursharan Kaur, the wife of the former Prime Minister, arrived at the Gurdwara to participate in Kirtan and Guru Path. The funeral witnessed the presence of family, friends, colleagues, and eminent government dignitaries. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid their last respects by placing wreaths near his mortal remains.

The Cremation Ceremony

The solemn last rites took place at the VIP Ghat, following Sikh customs. Dr. Singh’s remains were placed on a pyre of sandalwood, marking a respectful farewell. Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, also attended, paying tributes to a leader whose impact on the nation was profound.

Manmohan Singh’s political journey spanned several decades, marking significant milestones in India’s governance and economy. As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, he introduced economic reforms that reshaped the nation’s financial landscape. Serving as the 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, his leadership during economic crises and efforts in modernizing India’s economy were particularly noteworthy.

Following his tenure, Dr. Singh retired from public life, leaving behind a legacy of growth and international standing for India. The conclusion of his prime ministership saw Narendra Modi succeed him in 2014, after the Congress-led UPA’s electoral defeat.
